Backtracks. Sound and dance installation. In collaboration with Horace Lindezey and Daniel Hendrickson (2023).
The Project:
The piece is a sound and dance installation featuring the piece ”They built the flats in ‘69” (Lindezey) and a musical (Hendrickson) and dance (Dziemidok) composition. It was designed in a process of collaboration and exchange between the artists. It attempts to establish a common narration about erosion, disappearance, remaining and enduring. It searches for traces of the past, via an exploration of the sound of records from a time long gone, played too often, held too close. The music might be forgotten, but the traces remain, on the vinyl, in the ear, in the body. Both the body and the record are articles of use and abuse, are archives of facts, as well as fanatsies. They are our curses and our blessings.
From the dancer:
As of 2024 I am a dancer with over 30 years of experience. Dance for me is not a profession, but a calling. Through dance I rediscover myself as a human, it organizes my body into a persona, who negotiates himself with time and space, and is able to merge with them, which is a place of uncanny comfort. Music is organized time - for me personally - also a realm where the dance appears, first as an idea and then as the actual practice. The crux of my research and work in recent years, has been finding a moment where dance and music merge, where they work in synergy. It is a moment when the body becomes time and vice versa. It has a subversive potential towards the narrative of piece-making, of a performance designed as a manipulative act. The moment of merger allows a platform of sharing time together to appear. It is is unobtrusive, yet inviting, it leaves audience free to experience, to interpret or not. It doesn’t aim for aesthetic effect, it’s stripped of theatricality, decorum and dramaturgy, other than the one created by the very merger. It’s a moment of relief for all.
